Hampton Roads: In- & Out-Flow of DoD Contracting Dollars
Kayla Henneman & Swaraj Wankhade
Description
Because DoD contracting is a large part of Hampton Roads' economy, it is important to know how the contracting money flows in and out of the area. For this reason, our project looks to discover trends in the DoD contracting dollar money flow of Hampton Roads, such as: netflow of contracting dollars, where the money flows to if it is leaving here, and where the money comes from if it coming to Hampton Roads. To this end, we created a Bubble Map of the United States, where hue is used to encode type of flow and size of bubble is used to encode the amount of dollars flowing to or from a particular county. We also keep two line graphs next to the map so the user always has an overview of how the inflows and outflows have changed overtime. In addition, when a user hovers over a county the name of the county and amount of inflow/outflow dollars is shown and the line graphs change to show only data for that county over time.
What-Why-How Framework Table
What | Geographic geometry data with the quantitative attribute, contract dollars per county |
Why | To discover trends in the DoD contracting dollar money flow of Hampton Roads, such as: netflow of contracting dollars, where the money flows to if it is leaving here, and where the money comes from if it coming to Hampton Roads. |
How | Space: Use given geometry to center bubbles on. Hue: To encode type of flow Area: Amount of inflow/outflow dollars |
